Excel Basics

Adding two numbers in Excel is very easy.

e.g. You want to add two number.

1st number 2

2nd number 3

Now select any cell.....for example select Cell no B3. After selecting the cell click on the Formula bar. (It should be just below of your tool bar.

You can see a "fx" written just before it..its a long blank place.)

Type this in the Formula Bar "= 2+3"

When you press enter or press tab button you will see the exact value for the addition of those numbers. In this case it will be 5.

You can do this by auto-sum key. This key situated in your Tool bar. It looks like this :-

Step to add two or more numbers using auto-sum.

Just enter your desired numbers in a range of cells. Now, when you finished with entering numbers in the cells then just select the cell where you want to display your sum result and click on that specific auto-sum icon in the tool bar.

Just after clicking on that icon a range of cell will be automatically selected. You can now manually drag or change the range of the selected cells (suppose the automatically selected range is from B3 to D5 but you want it from B3 to C8. Just select it manually and selection rules are as same as in others.).

When you finished with your selection. Just hit enter. The result will appear in your desired cell automatically.

Adding value of two different Cell

Suppose you want to add values of Cell no B3 and Cell no D4. and you also want to display the result in the Cell no E5. Now, double click on the cell no E5 or you can also select the cell E5 and then go to Formula bar. After double clicking or pointing to Formula bar just type this formula:-

=sum(b3+d4)

After entering this into formula bar hit enter. From now, whenever your put a value in those cells you will be automatically shown their sum in the cell no E5.

Do not forget to type the Equal sign "=". If you dont give an equal sign before an formula then it will not work as a formula. Also remove the double inverted comma from the 1st formula.

First of all, let me tell you a few things about over eating. Simply put, after eating, your blood sugar level starts to increase and in response to it, the pancreas produces insulin to bring the sugar level to normal But over a period of time, with those who over eat, the muscle cells become insulin insensitive. Insulin prevents your blood sugar from rising too high, particularly after you eat. So when your cells do not respond adequately to insulin, your pancreas produces very large amounts of insulin, which constricts coronary arteries to increase your chances of suffering a heart attack, stimulates your brain to make you hungry and causes fat to be deposited in your belly.

The only places that you can store extra sugar in your body are in your liver and muscles. When you eat, sugar passes from your intestines, into your bloodstream, and then into your muscles and liver. When your muscles are full of sugar, sugar can only enter your liver, and your blood levels rise too high. This causes sugar to stick to cells. Once stuck on a cell, sugar is converted to sorbitol which damages the cells to cause blindness, heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage and all the other side effects of diabetes. In a person with normal metabolism, insulin is released from the beta (â) cells after eating, and it signals insulin-sensitive tissues in the body (like muscles and adipose) to absorb glucose to lower blood glucose to a normal level. In an insulin resistant person, normal levels of insulin do not trigger the signal for glucose absorption by muscle and adipose cells. To compensate for this, the pancreas in an insulin resistant individual releases much more insulin such that the cells are adequately triggered to absorb glucose. Occasionally, this can lead to a steep drop in blood sugar and a hypoglycemic reaction several hours after the meal.The most common type of insulin resistance is associated with a disease state known as metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance can progress to full type 2 diabetes. This is often seen when hyperglycemia develops after a meal, when pancreatic â-cells are unable to produce adequate insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels (euglycemia). The inability of the â-cells to produce more insulin in a condition of hyperglycemia is what characterizes the transition from insulin resistance to type 2 diabetes.

And do you know the worst thing that can happen to someone who is insulin resistant. Sometimes even small amounts of sweets or anything that can trigger insulin panic can cause to become fat, which is why even small quantities of food can sometimes make you fat.Now, what do we do to make sure that whatever we eat is not contributing to the already swollen fat cells in the body? The only way out is to make sure that we shun all foods that causes insulin spike. And they are sweets, sweetened drinks, sugar, chips, chocolates, biscuits, dried fruits [sugar from fruits are okay as they do not panic the pancreas into producing more insulin, but dried fruits are a big no no], all bakery food, aerated drinks like pepsi, thumsup etc, alcohol, beer etc. This is not to tell you that all fried foods and fats are okay to eat. They are bad too and have to be avoided.Now we come to the diet and as I have mentioned earlier, make sure you avoid all foods that causes insulin panic.

· Drink three glasses of water as soon as you wake up. This is very difficult the first time and so it is good idea to start with just half a glass of water the first week, increasing the quantity by half a glass every week.

· Eat some fruits half an hour later. You may eat any fruit and any amount you like. Contrary to popular belief, fruits do not add up to your waist line, whether it is banana or mangoes or any fruit in its natural state, that is, if you do not cook and alter its chemical composition.

· Two hours later, you may have your breakfast, which can be anything you usually make at home like dosa or chappathi or iddli, only you do not eat more than two of them and if it is “puttu”, eat just an equivalent quantity. Rice, wheat and food like baked potatoes, tapioca are sources of complex carbohydrates which give out energy in a slow sustained manner and so it is very important that you choose one of these food sources to eat at this time of the day.

.· Every office or college has about five to ten minutes break around 10.30am and that is when your next meal comes. Eat a handful of ground nuts [not fried]. Ground nuts also contain a little bit of fat, but they are what you call the safe fats. You see, fats are not always bad, we need fat to maintain body temperature, the sheath over the nerves is a type of fat coating, are just a few reasons why we need fat in the body.

· Now for lunch, at around 1 pm. You may have about one and a half cup of rice or two chappathi and along with it, eat some fish which is not fried. You may also eat any curry with it and make sure to include a vegetable salad too.

· Around 4 pm, eat some fruits. As I mentioned earlier, sugar from fruits are safe and so eat as much fruits as you like.

· The next meal is at around 6.30pm which is just one omlette with a vegetable salad.

· At about 8.30 – 9 pm, you may eat two chappathi with any curry you like.

· Before going to bed, have some fruits· Drink one glass of water with every meal and more if you like.

An undersea earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck off India's Andaman islands in the Indian Ocean on Friday, the US Geological Survey said, causing people to flee their homes.Officials and witnesses said the quake triggered panic and fears of a repeat of the devastating 2004 tsunami that ravaged the island chain.Residents ran out of their homes as the powerful jolt rattled buildings, already weakened by a series of earthquakes that have hit the Andamans since the tsunami.

The epicentre of the quake was 115 kilometres (70 miles) southwest from capital Port Blair.

With its epicentre near Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the quake occurring at around 1700 hrs lasted a few seconds and rocked several parts of Chennai including the busy T Nagar, Nugambakkam and Koyambedu areas, Met office sources and the police told .Employees working in a multi-storeyed building in Venkatnarayana Road in T Nagar rushed out of office as they experienced the tremor, police said.

However, there is no immediate report about any loss of life or property due to the quake.Emloyees working near Marina Beach Ran Out of the office because of the Building Shake Felt.

Among 100's of students who are stranded in us from india after their flying school was closed down about a week ago.The students include trainees from Chennai ,Mumbai Delhi ,Pune etc.These students were part of a commericial pilot training programme run by the American School Of Aviation which had tie up with kingfisher airlines.However it is belved that kingfisher has denied that it had "contractual obligations"with the school.

The school informed the students last month that it was facing financial crunch and it might be forced to close down.India has only 32 flying school and only 14 are functioning due to lack of infracture which is the main reason why indian students constitute a major part of students studying in the US flying School.

Hope the indian goverment does something to protect the intest of these stranded students.A question arises about how the economy in US is heading and will be it the same for the number of university ? Will they also close due to finacial crunch?

No OBC quota in IIMs, AIIMS

K Venugopal, one of India's highly respected lawyers told rediff.com on Thursday, "According to today's judgment, the Indian Institute of Management and All India Institute of Medical Sciences will not have any reservation for Other Backward Classes."

Venugopal appeared in this landmark hearing in the Supreme Court on behalf of the Junior Doctors Association of AIIMS, New Delhi.

Explaining the reason behind it, he said, "Justices Arijit Pasayat, C K Thakker and Dalveer Bhandari has clearly said in their judgment that you ceased to be OBC when you are educated and attain graduation. Test of the OBC is social and educational backwardness. It says "and", that means if you are not educationally backward you are not OBC. The court has accepted the argument that if you are able to graduate you are not entitled to reservation."

"Not only IIMs, but even AIIMS and such other centres of higher learning will not have any OBC reservation," Venugopal added.

While putting the entire judgment in perspective Venugopal said, "This balanced judgment has scaled down the huge volume of OBC to the core level of OBC. This judgment has upheld the economic criteria of 1993 depriving large number of members of OBC from benefiting from reservation. It is a serious setback to the government who wanted to fill up prestigious institutes with OBC quotas. Today's judgment has kept graduation as the 'cut-off' point that will reduce the numbers of beneficiaries of OBC reservation."

"The 1993 criteria to decide 'creamy layer' amongst OBC section says that people with landed property, all government employees above Class II, all OBC families with monthly income of Rs 20,000 (gross annual income of Rs.2.5 lakh and above ) etc. are barred from availing any reservation from now onwards," Venugopal said.

The world had just about enough cereal stocks to feed the global population for two to three months. With a crisis looming worldwide, food prices too are far from coming down, the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation revealed .The rise in prices of food commodities all over the world will not ease in the short term in view of supply-demand situation,FAO director general Jacques Diouf told reporters after meeting agriculture minister Sharad Pawar.Diouf said the world has 4-5 million tonne of cereals stocks that can feed the global population for only 8-12 weeks.

The world food situation is very serious today with food riots reported from many countries like Egypt, Cameroon, Haiti, Burkina Faso and Senegal. The fear is that this may spread to other countries.World food prices have risen 45% in the last nine months and there are serious shortages of rice, wheat and maize.

The increasing demand from developing countries, particularly in China and India, and diversion of food grains towards production of bio-fuels to rising commodity prices across the world.However, Pawar expressed confidence that India's food situation was comfortable."We have over half a million tonne of food grain surplus than the buffer norms as on April 1," Pawar said.

According to Food Corporation of India, the wheat stock as on April 1 is 5.5 MT against the buffer norm of 4 MT.

Microsoft, the world's largest software company, is reportedly in preliminary talks to buy online search company Yahoo!. And if the two companies do decide to merge, they could create an Internet advertising powerhouse that would rival industry leader Google. According to the reports, Microsoft is said to be considering an offer of as much as $50 billion for Yahoo. That would value Yahoo at about $36.75 a share. The stock was trading at around $32.75 following Friday's spike.

Microsoft has struggled to make inroads in the rapidly growing online advertising business. The company's MSN division ranks a distant third to Google and Yahoo in the online search market.

Last week, Microsoft reported in its latest quarterly earnings report that revenues at its online division grew only 10 percent, below the industry average, and that the unit posted an operating loss of $200 million.

To that end, one executive who works in the search business said that Microsoft does face a sense of urgency and that a deal for Yahoo would be the one thing that could finally make Google nervous.

"Google likes to be arrogant but if this deal happened, they would have to sit up and take notice. Microsoft hasn't shown much so far in online advertising but an acquisition of Yahoo would be a very good combination," said Samir Patel, founder and CEO of SearchForce, a privately held software firm that lets advertisers manage keyword purchases on Google, Yahoo and MSN. .

Yahoo has fared better than Microsoft but has also found it difficult to compete with Google. Yahoo recently upgraded its search technology platform in order to make keyword search results more relevant for advertisers and users.

Analysts had hoped that the new system, dubbed Project Panama, would lead to market share gains and improved revenue and profits for Yahoo. But Yahoo released disappointing first quarter results last month and also issued tepid sales guidance for the second quarter.

Google, on the other hand, has continued to click, so to speak. The company posted first quarter results last month that far exceeded analysts' consensus estimates. What's more, Google announced in April that it was buying online ad placement firm DoubleClick for $3.1 billion, a deal that analysts think will bolster Google's prospects in the so-called branded advertising market, which include banners, videos and other online graphical ads. Google's purchase of online video sharing site YouTube last year also is seen as a way for Google to extend its market lead beyond search.
